Park Board approves design for new park in Kitsilano and Fairview neighbourhoods

April 14 2026 –

At last night’s meeting, Park Board commissioners approved the concept plan for a new park at Burrard Slopes, giving the green light for the development and construction of a new one-hectare neighbourhood park on the border of Kitsilano and Fairview.

This new park will provide much-needed green space for these two rapidly growing neighbourhoods. Once complete, visitors will enjoy a new dog off-leash area, central lawn area and meadow walk, skateboard and small-wheels spot, fitness area, washroom, an expanded playground and accessible pathways. The design for the park was shaped by what we heard from local First Nations, local businesses and community members.

"Kitsilano and Fairview are two of the fastest growing neighbourhoods in Vancouver and with the ongoing development of the Broadway Plan, these areas will see further population growth over the coming years,” says Park Board Chair Tom Digby. “Burrard Slopes Park will be a vital greenspace for the community to gather, play, enjoy culture and seek rest and relaxation for years to come.”

The final concept design for the park was amended in 2025, following the acquisition by the Park Board of property at 5th Avenue and Fir Street. By purchasing this final parcel of land on the block, staff were able to expand the park footprint with more space for amenities, including a new fitness area with workout equipment.

During engagement with the community, we heard that Burrard Slopes Park should be a warm and welcoming gathering place which supports health and wellbeing through both passive and active recreation options.

Planned features include:

  • A large, level lawn at the heart of the park to support a range of activities, including day-to-day socializing and small local events.
  • An expanded playground featuring a seesaw, universally accessible spinner and swing set, with accessible surfacing and a circuit pathway.
  • An enclosed dog off-leash area, separate from the lawn and garden areas, to meet the need of the area’s high – and increasing – canine community, and to foster social connections.
  • A skateboard and small-wheel spot, specifically designed to be approachable and accessible for all ages and abilities has been included in response to the Park Board’s Skateboard Amenities Strategy and feedback received during public engagement. The plaza-style skatepark will be surrounded by planted hills to mitigate sound and create a safe buffer from other park activities.
  • New pollinator and rain gardens featuring a diverse selection of native and adapted flowers and planting.

Staff will now begin developing detailed designs ahead of construction planned for 2027.

An official park name for the park will be identified and announced through a separate naming process.
