Vancouver Park Board introduces operational changes to outdoor pools

July 31 2025 –

The Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation is introducing operational changes to outdoor pools starting August 5, 2025. These adjustments are part of a summer trial aimed at improving flexibility and access for drop-in users.

The following updates will take effect:

  • Drop-in discount at all outdoor pools
A 50% discount will be applied to drop-in admissions during the final 45 minutes of outdoor pool swim sessions. This discount does not apply to length swim sessions (7 am – 8:30 am) or to reservations. This applies to Kitsilano Pool, Second Beach Pool, New Brighton Pool, and Maple Grove Pool.

This change is intended to provide better value for drop-in users who may arrive later in a session or have less flexibility in their schedules.

  • Extended afternoon session at Kitsilano Pool
The current 3 pm – 5:30 pm and 6 pm – 8:30 pm swim sessions at Kitsilano Pool will be combined into a single 3 pm – 8:30 pm session.

This adjustment offers flexibility for drop-in users to arrive at varying times while still enjoying a sufficient length swim session.

The current reservation system will remain in place, with 80% of spots allocated for reservations and 20% initially allocated for drop-ins. We actively manage capacity based on real-time attendance, allowing for increased drop-in availability, when possible, while maintaining safe swimmer-to-lifeguard ratios.

The Park Board’s reservation system allows users, especially those traveling from farther away, to plan their visits with confidence. With the exception of a few peak days, most drop-in swimmers were accommodated at all outdoor pool facilities. Timed swim sessions have also helped ensure safe, efficient access to pools across the city while reducing wait times.

These changes, including the drop-in discount and the extended session at Kitsilano Pool, are intended to improve the experience for drop-in users looking to enjoy our outdoor pools this summer.
