Measures in place for potential unpermitted 420 events
April 17 2025 –
In 2024, the City and the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation were aware of three formal 420 gatherings being planned at public locations, with the largest at Sunset Beach. As of now, staff are aware of one planned informal 420 gathering at Sunset Beach for 2025.
The City and Park Board are working with the Vancouver Police Department, the Province, TransLink, and public health partners to actively monitor the situation and ensure a coordinated response if needed. The following measures will be in place to minimize community impacts and ensure public safety and respectful use of shared spaces.
- Streets adjacent to Sunset Beach, Thornton Park and the Vancouver Art Gallery will have no stopping, no parking restrictions from Saturday, April 19 at 8 pm through sunset on Sunday, April 20.
- Sunset Beach parking lot will be closed from the evening of Saturday April 19 through April 20. Vehicle access to Sunset Beach will close Saturday evening and re-open on Easter Monday.
- Park Rangers, the Vancouver Police Department and City Protective Services will be present at Sunset Beach Park and Thornton Park throughout the day to support public safety.
- The Sunset Beach washrooms are currently closed for water line maintenance, but portable toilets are available on site.
- The Vancouver Aquatic Centre will remain open this year
