Take the City’s UN Quality of Life Survey through October 1

September 12 2024 –

Vancouver is taking part in a United Nations (UN) global pilot project on quality of life, as one of 11 cities worldwide invited to join the pilot by the UN.

As part of this program, the City of Vancouver is inviting residents to complete a new Quality of Life Survey. The survey is open until October 1 and takes about 10 minutes to complete.

By participating in the survey, you’ll help City staff and partner organizations better understand how different communities experience life in Vancouver and help develop a UN tool designed to measure quality of life around the world.

The survey was created using questions from the UN and tailored to reflect life in Vancouver. The UN Quality of Life Initiative defines quality of life in nine key areas, which in Vancouver are linked to policies, programs and services delivered by various agencies and levels of government. While the City of Vancouver is the lead agency collecting the data on behalf of the project, City staff have worked with staff in other agencies to develop and localize questions.

“Our team at City Hall is committed to making Vancouver a vibrant, healthy and inclusive city where everyone can live, work and thrive,” said Mayor Ken Sim. “Partnering with UN-Habitat on this initiative gives us a unique chance to gather valuable insights and help shape a tool that will benefit cities around the world.”

Participating in the Quality of Life Initiative is part of the work Vancouver is undertaking to refresh its Healthy City Strategy in 2024 and 2025. The Healthy City Strategy is the City’s plan for social sustainability, developed in close collaboration with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) and other partners. This initiative also supports the City’s 2020 Council motion to align the Healthy City Strategy with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

There is no cost to the City of Vancouver to participate in this UN initiative and Council approved participation in November 2023 (44 KB) .

The Quality of Life Initiative , led by the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat), aims to develop a comprehensive, human-centric concept of quality of life and create a new, innovative tool to measure it in cities worldwide.
