Update on temporary memorials near 43rd Avenue and Fraser Street
Following the tragic incident on April 26, 2025, many temporary memorials have appeared near 43rd Avenue and Fraser Street. These memorials reflect the community’s deep grief and shared mourning, seeking to honour the victims, their families, and all those impacted.
The City of Vancouver recognizes the importance of these expressions of remembrance and grief while also recognizing the need for those who live and attend school in the immediate area to also be able to heal from this tragic incident.
Over the coming days, to support respectful spaces for remembrance, the local neighbourhood’s path to healing, and safety and accessibility of roads and sidewalks, City staff will carefully consolidate the temporary memorials to two temporary locations: one temporary memorial at 43rd Avenue and Fraser Street and a new temporary memorial at nearby Mountain View Cemetery. The planning for this work has been done in consultation with VPD Victim Services, who are in regular contact with the families of victims, with the support of the Vancouver School Board (VSB), and in communication with cultural organizations and other partners.
“This is difficult work that will be done with care and respect by City workers,” says Sandra Singh, Deputy City Manager. “We thank the local neighbourhood, Vancouver residents and community partners for their ongoing compassion, care and respect while this sensitive work is underway.”
“We sincerely appreciate the City's collaborative and thoughtful approach during this incredibly challenging time for our community. Recognizing the diverse needs and impacts for many, we appreciate the consideration shown toward students, staff and members of school communities,” says Helen McGregor, VSB Superintendent. “The careful consideration of all those affected reflects the importance of healing and unity."
As part of this consolidation, items including cards, signs and teddy bears will be moved to Mountain View Cemetery or stored off-site and fresh flowers will be moved to 43rd Avenue and Fraser Street. Items that are perishable and have dried or wilted will be gently removed and composted, and items that may present a safety risk, for example broken candleholders, will be safely disposed.
In the days to come, members of the community are welcome to bring items of remembrance to either of the two temporary sites, noting that candles and glass objects are not permitted at the cemetery. The City will maintain a schedule of care at the memorial sites in close coordination with Victim Services and community groups.
