Vancouver Aquatic Centre to reopen following repairs
The Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation is pleased to welcome back swimmers and community groups to the Vancouver Aquatic Centre (VAC) tomorrow. The facility will reopen following a closure two weeks ago after a small piece of ceiling material came loose.
During the closure, the facility underwent a thorough safety review, and precautionary ceiling netting was installed to ensure the safety of patrons and staff. These measures were inspected and the facility determined to be safe for public use this week by the City’s Chief Building Officer and structural engineers.
This type of issue can occur in older buildings, and VAC is more than 50 years old and beyond its intended service life. Similar precautionary steps have been taken in other parts of the facility to maintain safety.
The Vancouver Aquatic Centre continues to be a well-used and vital part of the Park Board's indoor aquatic network.
The City and Park Board have allocated funding in the 2023–2026 Capital Plan to deliver a new Vancouver Aquatic Centre, with construction anticipated to begin in 2026.
