Plan a block party in your neighbourhood
Whether you live on a street with houses or apartments, block parties bring people together on the street, build social connections, and improve community living.
Organize a block party with your neighbours to celebrate a summer weekend or holiday, or focus on a local issue, like traffic calming.
Block parties are affordable to plan. Insurance, barricades, and permits are free, thanks to the cooperation of the City and your local community centre.
Get started planning a block party with these four steps.
1. Involve your neighbours
Share your idea for the block party and closing the street with your neighbours, and record their support with the sign-off form.
- Have neighbours on the block (including across the street from each end of the block) fill out the sign-off form.
- Try recruiting volunteers to help you with this step.
- At least 65% of households must support the block party.
Plan your block party on a Saturday, Sunday, or statutory holiday, between 10:00am and dusk. Pick an open day without existing plans for movers or other gatherings.
We must receive your application at least two weeks before the your chosen date.
2. Check if the free insurance is enough
Approved block parties get free general liability insurance from the Vancouver Park Board and Sport BC. The insurance covers party organizers and the City of Vancouver to a limit of $2,000,000 for public liability and property damage.
If you want additional coverage, contact a private insurance broker.
3. Apply for your free permit online
Vancouver has a lot of block parties! Make sure to apply two weeks before your party date.
Next, we will reply to confirm details and request your completed sign-off form. When everything is in order, we email your block party permit.
4. Pick up street barriers to reserve the road for your block party
We reserve barricades at the community centre you requested in your application. Barricades are in limited supply and reserved for approved block parties on a first-come, first-served basis.
Contact the community centre to confirm when to pickup the barricades.
Bring a copy of your approved block party permit and a $50.00 cheque deposit. Get your deposit back when you return the barricades.
