People cycling in bike lane downtown

Expanding the downtown bike network

We have been working towards building a comprehensive downtown cycling network that:

  • Provides a safer and more comfortable cycling environment for people of all ages and abilities (AAA)
  • Accommodates the loading and access needs of adjacent businesses, institutions, and residences
  • Minimizes costs and disruptions by:
    • Coordinating with scheduled repaving plans or new development
    • Coordinating with planned upgrades to City infrastructure, such as sewers and watermains
    • Using primarily inexpensive measures, such as paint and signs
  • Maintains on-street parking where possible
  • Reduces conflicts between vehicles, buses, and people walking, biking, and rolling

The downtown bike network links many key destinations, including shopping streets, medical centres, cultural institutions, and major transit hubs. Check out the latest bike network map

Starting in 2026, we're planning to make it easier and safer to walk, bike, and roll along Dunsmuir and Melville streets from Hornby Street to the Coal Harbour seawall.

Review our proposed design that:

  • Closes a gap in the downtown active transportation network
  • Creates direct and intuitive connections
  • Accommodates vehicle movement
  • Improves safety for all
