Stage 2 water restrictions

On July 13, 2026, Metro Vancouver announced that Stage 2 water restrictions  will be back in effect starting July 16, 2026. Lawn watering is not allowed for all residential and non-residential properties.

Metro Vancouver sets the rules for watering restrictions, and we enforce them through our by-law (280 KB). Watering infractions could result in a $500 fine under Stage 2 restrictions.

Stage 2 restrictions will stay in place until October 15, 2026, unless otherwise stated.

No water exemption permits are issued under Stage 2, 3, or 4 restrictions as stated in section 3.5 of the Drinking Water Conservation By-law (280 KB).

Stage 2: water restrictions in effect July 16

Residential

Lawn watering is prohibited.

Watering trees, shrubs, and flowers is permitted any day from 5am to 9am if using an automatic or manual sprinkler, or any time if hand watering or using drip irrigation. Hoses must have an automatic shut-off nozzle.

Vegetable gardens can be watered any time.

Non-residential

Lawn watering is prohibited.

Watering trees, shrubs, and flowers is permitted any day from 4am to 9am if using an automatic or manual sprinkler, or any time if hand watering or using drip irrigation. Hoses must have an automatic shut-off nozzle.

Vegetable gardens can be watered any time.

Understanding watering restrictions

Seasonal water restrictions are in place each year, regardless of weather, and usually begin at Stage 1.

Summer water demand is mostly from:

  • Lawn watering
  • Plant irrigation
  • Other outdoor uses

Following these restrictions helps conserve drinking water when demand is high. Water restrictions are part of the regional Drinking Water Conservation Plan  set by Metro Vancouver.
