Oak Street to temporarily close near VGH starting Thursday

September 9 2026 –

Starting early Thursday morning, September 10, Oak Street will be fully closed to vehicle traffic in both directions between W 10th and W 12th avenues to support crane activity for Vancouver Coastal Health’s Vancouver General Hospital Operating Room Renewal Project . Both W 10th Avenue and W 12th Avenue will remain open throughout.

The closure will be in place 24 hours per day until September 22. Access to residents, businesses and health services will be maintained.

VPD traffic control personnel will be on site to support the public and maintain intersections outside of the closure. Please follow all detours and abide by “No Parking” and “No Stopping” signs in the area.

Those travelling through the area should expect delays. If you are visiting Vancouver General Hospital or other facilities within the 10th Avenue health precinct, please plan an alternate route and allow extra travel time.

From September 10 to 22, here is what travellers in the area can expect.

  • Drivers:
    • Oak Street will be fully closed from W 10th Avenue to W 12th Avenue.
    • Cross streets remain open with intermittent closures.
    • Expect detours and parking restrictions throughout the project.
  • Cyclists: The W 10th Avenue bikeway will remain open. Please travel with caution and follow posted signs.
  • Walking: Sidewalks on Oak Street will remain open with some intermittent closures.
