City of Vancouver and Vancouver School Board support community remembrance following the April 26 tragedy
As the community reflects on the April 26, 2025 tragedy following the 2025 Lapu-Lapu Day Block Party, the City of Vancouver and the Vancouver School Board (VSB) remember the lives lost and those injured, and acknowledge the profound and lasting impact on victims’ families, survivors whose lives were forever changed, and all those affected — including first responders, witnesses and the broader community.
This may be an especially difficult time for many, and offers an opportunity for the community to pause, reflect and remember together. The City and VSB are working together to support safe and respectful spaces for remembrance.
“My heart goes out to the families who lost loved ones, and to everyone whose lives were changed that day,” said Mayor Ken Sim. “This time will be incredibly difficult for many. Vancouver has demonstrated real strength in how people have supported one another through this, and that matters as we take time to remember. “
“As we continue to hold all those affected in our thoughts, what we have seen over the past year is the resilience of our community, as people come together,” said VSB Board Chair Victoria Jung. “In moments of tragedy, Vancouver has shown how deeply we look out for one another. We see this in our schools, as part of that broader community response, rooted in care and support.”
To support a safe and accessible place for reflection, the City continues to care for a temporary memorial at Mountain View Cemetery near Fraser Street and East 41st Avenue. Community members are encouraged to visit the memorial as a dedicated space to honour those lost.
To support the surrounding neighbourhood and nearby school, signage will encourage people to leave items at the temporary memorial at Mountain View Cemetery. If any items are left at the roadside, they will be gently collected and relocated as feasible to the temporary memorial site at Mountain View Cemetery one week following this time of remembrance. We ask that people not leave candles. Where appropriate, wilted flowers and glass will be respectfully composted or recycled.
The City and VSB extend deepest condolences to the victims, their families and all those impacted.
