Vancouver Police Department (VPD) Victim Services Unit 

If you are a victim, a family member, or you witnessed the incident, please contact the VPD Victim Services Unit. The Victim Services Unit staff are not police officers, but civilian professionals with specialized training in supporting those impacted by crime, victimization, and trauma.

They provide long-term case management services, including:

• Emotional support and crisis intervention
• Information regarding the police investigative process
• Assistance with funeral planning, repatriation, and next steps following a death
• Access to Provincial programs such as the Crime Victim Assistance Program (CVAP) and ICBC, as well as other designated sources of financial aid
• Practical assistance including completing forms related to eligible benefits and programs
• Referrals to other community resources including bereavement support, counseling, cultural support, and practical aid
• Liaising with government, justice, and community partners including the BC Prosecution Service
• Information regarding the criminal justice system, and support through the court process including accompaniment to justice related proceedings and the assistance of our Accredited Facility Dog, Sydney

ICBC has put together a dedicated team and resources for victims, witnesses, and family members of those impacted by this event.

It provides information and referral services to all victims of crime and immediate crisis support to victims of family and sexual violence, including victims of human trafficking exploited for labour or sexual services.

Temporary memorial at Mountain View Cemetery

To support a safe and accessible place for reflection and remembrance, the City continues to care for a temporary memorial at Mountain View Cemetery near Fraser Street and East 41st Avenue.

Located close to the incident site, but away from the busy roadway and school grounds, the cemetery site offers sheltered spaces for remembrance, with seating and weather protection.

Community members are encouraged to visit the memorial as a dedicated space to honour those lost.

Bringing new memorial items

You are welcome to bring items to the Mountain View Cemetery memorial, with the exception of candles or glass objects.

If any items are left at the roadside, they will be gently collected and relocated as feasible to the temporary memorial at Mountain View Cemetery one week following the commemoration.

We ask that people not leave candles and, where appropriate, wilted flowers and glass will be respectfully composted or recycled.

Help keep the temporary memorial safe and accessible for all

• Avoid leaving large items.
• Do not bring candles or glass objects. These are not permitted at Mountain View Cemetery for safety reasons.
• Flameless candles are preferred.
• Please do not disturb items left by others.
• Share the space respectfully with others.

We’re aware of the interest in a long-term memorial to honour those who lost their lives.  

Any decisions about a permanent memorial will be guided by a victim and family centred approach and will take time.

We recognize the importance of allowing space for healing and ongoing conversation before moving forward on any permanent commemoration, and no specific timeline has been established.
