Tails and tales: The Canine Library returns to John Hendry Park

September 5 2024 –

The Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation, in partnership with Vancouver Public Library, invites the public to their fourth annual Canine Library event with therapy dogs on Saturday, September 21, 2024, at John Hendry (Trout Lake) Park.

The Canine Library provides a nurturing environment where participants can read to therapy dogs from the St. John Ambulance’s Therapy Dog Program.

Petting a dog is also proven to aid in emotional regulation, an important social and emotional skill. This initiative highlights the value of reading, literacy, and pet-friendly park spaces in promoting community connections and contributing to mental health and physical well-being.

The event offers attendees the chance to read poetry from a collection curated by Vancouver Public Library to their canine companions. Adding to the festivities, VPL’s Writer in Residence will host a poetry workshop at this rain or shine literary party in the park.
