We all have a role to play: upholding election integrity at voting locations

April 4 2025 –

Tomorrow is the last chance for voters to cast their ballot in the Vancouver by-election, where residents have the opportunity to elect 2 new City councillors.

Record-breaking turnout during advance polling has set a positive tone, with 7671 ballots cast. In preparation for tomorrow’s general voting day, the Election Office reminds the public of the rules in place to provide a respectful environment for all, while upholding the integrity of the electoral process.

In accordance with section 125(4) of the Vancouver Charter, the following rules apply near all voting places:

125 “(4) In relation to voting proceedings, a person must not do any of the following at or within 100 metres of a building, structure, or other place where voting proceedings are being conducted at the time:

  1. canvass or solicit votes or otherwise attempt to influence how an elector votes;
  2. display, distribute, post or openly leave a representation of a ballot marked for a particular result in the voting;
  3. post, display or disseminate
    1. election advertising, or
    2. any material that identifies a candidate or elector organization, unless this is done with the authorization of the chief election officer;
  4. carry, wear or supply a flag, badge or other thing indicating that the person using it is a supporter of a particular candidate, elector organization or result in the voting.”.

Election officials will monitor all voting locations for any behaviour that contravenes these rules, and voters are encouraged to notify an election official if they witness any inappropriate behaviour.

We all have a role to play in upholding election integrity.
