Tips for using VanMap

To get help when you are using VanMap:

Monitor Settings

  • For the best fit and ideal display, your monitor settings should be at least 800X600 pixels, small fonts and high colour.

MapTips

  • When you pause the mouse pointer over a map object, you will often see information about that map object displayed in a small yellow pop-up window called a MapTip. The MapTip disappears when you move the mouse again.
  • To see MapTips, the Select button must be activated. MapTips will not work while any of the other toolbox buttons are selected.
  • The MapTip may contain information that is not visible on the map.
Example: When you position the mouse pointer over 375 W 10th Av, the MapTip displays the address.
  • Many neighbourhood communities, such as Renfrew Collingwood, Marpole and the West End, have their own Web sites containing information on schools, local community organizations, recreation and community profiles. To access this, turn on the local areas layer and double-click anywhere within the community boundaries. If no page appears, the community you have chosen does not have a Web page.

Zooming Tips

  • The Zoom Goto / Parcel Address Function is most useful when you know the site you are searching for does not have multiple addresses (i.e. for one-family dwellings). If you know the site has multiple addresses or you cannot find the address using this function, then try the Zoom Goto Hundred Block functions.
  • There is a limit on the number of selections that VanMap will return. For example, entering only a wild card symbol for the Zoom Goto Street Name search will return only the first 63 street names, in alphabetical order. Try to enter enough information so that you get more precise responses to your query.
  • VanMap Toolbox buttons Select, Pan, Zoom In and Zoom Out are "sticky" buttons for continuous selecting, panning and zooming. VanMap remembers the function of a sticky button you have clicked on until you select another sticky button. If you select a non-sticky button, after VanMap has zoomed to the correct location, it will still remember the previous sticky button function. The only way to change the function of the currently selected sticky button is to select another sticky button. All other buttons are not "sticky". They are one-click buttons except for Measure Distance which needs more than one click to perform the function.
  • If you forget to enter a 'Zoom to width' for Zoom Goto »  Parcel Address (it may appear that VanMap has not zoomed anywhere as you are still at too great a scale to see the address you have selected), or you wish to force a change to the map width after using Zoom Goto »  Places or Hundred Blocks, then use the Zoom > Width feature.
