  Who can participate

  Everyone is welcome. You can volunteer as an individual, a family, a business, a community group, or as part of a group of friends or neighbours.

  Students can join and earn volunteer hours for graduation. Seniors can participate to stay active in their community.

  Make a commitment to keep your community litter-free and have some fun while doing it.

  What is involved

  When volunteers pledge to adopt a block, they are encouraged to collect litter at least once a month for a minimum of 1 year.

  We'll provide the tools and supplies you need, including reusable gloves, garbage bags, reusable bucket, safety vest and litter pickers or tongs, and you supply the enthusiasm

  Why participate

  Sanitation Services provides daily street cleaning services such as sweeping streets and sidewalks, emptying public waste bins, and removing illegally dumped waste. We also facilitate additional micro-cleaning services by non-profit agencies through the Street Cleaning Grant Program.

  Although our crews and non-profit agencies already provide a substantial level of daily litter cleaning, there is still a lot of work to be done, particularly at the neighbourhood level. By participating in Adopt a Block, you will:

  • Supplement the city’s services to keep our neighbourhoods clean
  • Show pride in your city
  • Be a leader within your community and connect with neighbours  
  • Help protect our waterways by reducing pollution in storm water runoff
