Emergency Preparedness Workshops

A full schedule of classes can be found on the Search & Registration Information page

The Neighbourhood Emergency Preparedness Program (NEPP) is a series of workshops designed to inform and empower the citizens of Vancouver with information on preparing for, responding to, and recovering from disasters such as earthquakes, as well as mitigation measures to reduce their impact.

Workshop #1 - Personal Emergency Preparedness

As we have seen recently around the world, emergencies and disasters such as earthquakes can happen with little or no warning. Being prepared could save your life or the lives of others and significantly improve your quality of living in the aftermath yet few of us have taken the necessary steps to ensure that our families are prepared. This session will teach you to be prepared for any type of emergency or disaster you may be faced with. You will learn personal and family preparedness, how to develop a family emergency plan and how to perform a “home hazard hunt”.

Prerequisite: None
Duration: 2 hours
Cost: Free

Workshop #2 - Emergency Preparedness for You and Your Pet

We all know we live in an area that could be affected by a wide variety of emergencies or disasters and the time to prepare is now. The key to better surviving a disaster is to ensure you and your family are prepared before the disaster strikes. But what about Pets? We saw in Hurricane Katrina that people refused to evacuate if they were not able to take their pets with them. Don't let this happen to you. This session will cover the supplies you should have on hand, how to make your home safe, what to do if you are evacuated and other key steps in developing your family and pet emergency plan.

Prerequisite: None
Duration: 2 hours
Cost: Free

Workshop #3 - Apartment Living

Many sessions offered for emergency preparedness focus on people who live in houses, yet this is not relevant for many people living in Vancouver. This session addresses the unique challenges that people living in apartments or condominiums face when preparing for emergencies or disasters. We have all witnessed the recent earthquakes in Japan and New Zealand and have seen the devastation caused. Living in Vancouver, we too could be faced with an earthquake, yet few of us take the necessary steps to ensure that we are prepared. This session will guide you through the preparation process by covering what is required to develop your emergency plan, how to conduct a "home hazard hunt" as well as what to do when an earthquake strikes while you are living in an apartment or strata.

Prerequisite: None
Duration: 2 hours
Cost: Free

Workshop #4 - Neighbourhood Team Building

This workshop is currently under review and not being offered at this time. Check back for future updates.

Personal preparedness is the foundation of emergency preparedness, but preparedness works best when neighbours pool their resources and skills to respond together in the face of disaster. This workshop gives you information on how to prepare your neighbourhood so it could be self-sufficient for 72 hours after a disaster. It will teach you how to inventory your immediate neighbourhood for skills and equipment, and how to establish an emergency team to assist in fire suppression, light rescue, damage assessment, first aid and shelter. This workshop is best delivered in the neighbourhood environment. To book an instructor for this workshop, get 10 or more neighbours together and call 604-871-NEPP (6377) or send an email to nepp@vancouver.ca.

Prerequisite: Workshop #1 Personal Emergency Preparedness is recommended
Duration: 2 hours
