Good Things are in the Works: City invests in Mount Pleasant neighbourhood
The City of Vancouver is investing $1 million in streetscape improvements in Mount Pleasant to help create neighbourhood vibrancy, strengthen community connections and support local businesses.
Over the next year, impactful investments including sidewalk repairs, street cleaning, lighting improvements, pole painting, new bike racks, litter bin upgrades and more will be coming to the neighbourhood.
“Mount Pleasant is known for its creativity, diversity and strong sense of community,” said Mayor Ken Sim. “Main Street is one of Vancouver’s most vibrant corridors, and with support from the Uplifting Communities Fund, we’re investing in spaces that bring people together. These improvements will help strengthen connections, support local businesses and make this neighbourhood an even better place to live and gather.”
Uplifting Communities
In July 2024, Council approved a new $6 million Uplifting Communities Fund, designed to supplement existing capital projects and uplift various neighbourhoods by enhancing public spaces and creating a more vibrant community experience.
As part of Council’s ongoing commitment to enhance community vibrancy and support local businesses, Mount Pleasant is the second neighbourhood to receive investments through the Uplifting Communities Fund, following Hastings-Sunrise in spring 2025.
As neighbourhoods are selected, investments from the Uplifting Communities Fund will be tailored to each area to enhance the experience for residents, visitors and businesses in select neighbourhoods across the city, phased over the next two years.
Permanent plaza for Main & 14th
Additionally, starting this September the City will begin construction at the Main-14th Neighbourhood Plaza. Once permanent, this popular plaza will be enhanced to continue to support events, gatherings, and will have upgraded furniture for the community to enjoy.
Construction of the permanent plaza including nearby streetscape improvements will cost $4 million funded through the 2023-26 Capital Plan with support from the Province of British Columbia's Growing Communities Fund External website, opens in new tab.
Once complete in spring 2026, the permanent Main-14th Plaza will include:
- Flexible and open design to support a variety of events and layouts
- Built-in seating area and upgraded furniture
- New trees and green infrastructure including a rain garden
- Electrical upgrades, such as decorative lighting, to support small events
- Separate walking and cycling paths (14th Avenue bikeway)
- Drinking fountain
- Bus stop improvements along Main Street
- Wider sidewalks
- New concrete plaza surface
Together, key improvements happening through the Uplifting Communities fund and the upcoming Permanent Plaza construction represent a $5 million investment in Mount Pleasant.
The City is grateful for the ongoing support from the community and our plaza partner, the Mount Pleasant BIA External website, opens in new tab.
