
Plan ahead and expect delays on East 1st Avenue at Highway 1 over Thanksgiving long weekend
The City of Vancouver is advising drivers of significant traffic impacts over the Thanksgiving long weekend as crews complete ongoing road improvements along East 1st Avenue between Highway 1 and Boundary Road.
Drivers are advised to plan ahead, use alternate routes and expect delays in the area, especially those accessing Highway 1 via East 1st Avenue over the long weekend.
Starting at 11 pm on Friday, October 10, East 1st Avenue between Cassiar Street and Boundary Road will be fully closed to vehicle traffic. During this work, ramps to and from Highway 1, with the exception of the eastbound off-ramp, will also be closed. Pedestrians will be able to walk through the area during the closure.
Additionally, on Monday, October 13, there will be a southbound closure of the intersection at Boundary Road and East 1st Avenue.
All closures are scheduled to end by 7 am Tuesday, October 14.
The upgrades that are part of infrastructure upgrades that include:
- Repaving and line repainting of East 1st Avenue between Highway 1 and Boundary Road
- New curb ramps and improved pedestrian crossings between Rupert Street and Boundary Road
- A new dedicated left-turn lane from East 1st Avenue to Valiant Street
- Construction of a new centre median to replace one temporarily removed for FortisBC work
The work will be underway through 2025 and will improve safety and comfort for people who walk, bike and drive along the corridor.
