Lime expands shared e-scooter system into downtown Vancouver
Getting around the city will be even more sustainable this Earth Day as Lime External website, opens in new tab announces the expansion of its shared e-scooter system to downtown Vancouver just in time for spring.
Starting this week, residents and visitors will begin to see the installation of Lime parking stations throughout the downtown peninsula. Each parking station will designate a clear end-of-trip location while keeping streets safe and uncluttered. Locations were carefully selected, in collaboration with the City and with feedback from local businesses and residents, to focus on safety, ease of use and access to key downtown routes and destinations.
“Happy Earth Day, Vancouver! I am thrilled for the expansion of the shared e-scooter system which will add even more sustainable transportation options downtown,” says Mayor Ken Sim. “This expansion marks the next important step towards growing into a city-wide program, offering a safe, convenient, affordable, and emissions-free way to get around Vancouver.”
“All of us at Lime are thrilled and grateful for the opportunity to bring shared e-scooters to downtown Vancouver through this milestone expansion in sustainable transportation in the city. This launch wouldn’t be possible without the strong partnership and collaboration alongside the City of Vancouver, local communities and businesses. Together, we’ve built a program that supports the City’s climate goals, commitment to accessibility, and vision for a greener future. In Vancouver, our approach has always been rooted in community including building a local team that understands the city’s needs. We’re excited to continue supporting Vancouver with innovative, people-first mobility options that truly make a difference,” said Sonia Kandola, Senior Director of Government Relations at Lime.
About the Lime shared e-scooter system
Last year, Lime was selected as the successful vendor to operate a new shared e-scooter system in Vancouver, following a rigorous evaluation process in response to a Request for Proposals (RFP) issued on November 15, 2023. Unique to the City of Vancouver, the contract provides a shared e-scooter system with custom Lime parking stations and fleet. The system is cost-neutral to the City, with no financial contribution required from the City to the operator during the contract period.
Safety remains a top priority for both Lime and the City of Vancouver. The e-scooter system includes features such as slow and no-ride zones, helmet provision, sidewalk detection, a training mode, and helmet selfies to ensure responsible riding. Lime continues to monitor rider behaviour to ensure compliance with traffic regulations and proper parking practices.
Since launching in Hastings-Sunrise and Grandview Woodland neighbourhoods in September 2024 nearly 6,000 riders have taken over 33,000 trips with Lime.
