More patio space this summer

Expedited City process helps businesses impacted by COVID-19 (Coronavirus)

May 22 2020 –

We will launch an expedited application process for patio permits on June 1. City staff have been working on a new, faster online application process for businesses since a Council directive on May 12.

Small and medium-sized patios next to a business, or in a street parking space, can expect to receive their permit within 48 hours from the time they apply, provided they have met all application requirements. Complex applications will require more time to review and will follow the standard review process.

This website will have a webpage available for online patio applications, and all related information, starting June 1.

How we're supporting businesses

We have worked to create a more efficient application process, with clear guidelines to expedite your licence application.

Staff are also engaging with BIAs, business leaders, and community organizations across the city to identify opportunities to temporarily repurpose streets and parking lanes for new public spaces. These spaces can support additional seating, queuing, and other creative business uses.

Following a Provincial announcement earlier today, the BC Liquor and Cannabis Regulation branch will allow food-primary, liquor-primary, and manufacturer licensees, such as wineries, breweries, and distilleries, to apply through a simplified online process. City staff will work with business applicants to ensure that the coordination between these two processes is as smooth as possible.

Business Communications and Support Office

In an effort to assist the businesses community, we have established the COVID-19 Business Communications and Support Office.

The office is a single point of contact for Vancouver's local business owners to get information from us regarding business support programs, to learn what City-run business services are currently available, and to make suggestions to us concerning business and the economy.

Local businesses seeking help can connect with the office by:
