Library and reading room

The Carnegie Branch Library has about 11,000 books, DVDs, newspapers, and magazines on the shelves, including extensive aboriginal and Chinese language collections.

Don't have the ID needed for a Vancouver Public Library Card? No problem. The Carnegie reading room card is available for free.

The reading room card cannot be used at other library branches. However, the card can be used to request materials from other branches, which you can then pick up at Carnegie.

Learning Centre

Need help reading, writing, or upgrading your education?

Carnegie Learning Centre has been helping Downtown Eastside residents since the early 1980s. It is run by Capilano University as a volunteer-based program.

The Learning Centre also offers outreach programs to local Chinese seniors, Oppenheimer Park patrons, and WISH, a non-profit society that provides a variety of services for female survival sex workers.

Volunteer tutors needed

If you like helping people, consider becoming a volunteer tutor at the Learning Centre.

You do not need previous teaching experience to become a tutor.

Free tutor training is open to anyone who:

  • Can volunteer once a week
  • Has good reading and writing skills
  • Would like to improve their teaching skills
