Storefronts in the Marpole neighbourhood on Granville Street

City completes major sewer and street upgrades in Marpole

July 16 2026 –

The City of Vancouver has completed major infrastructure improvements in Marpole, delivering essential sewer upgrades to support the neighbourhood’s growing population, along with street and sidewalk improvements and more.

Valued at $20 million and delivered under the 2023-2026 Capital Plan (3.2 MB), the Granville Street Sewer Upgrades project included renewing and separating 700 metres of combined sewer pipes into dedicated stormwater and sanitary sewer systems along Granville Street, West 59th Avenue and West 62nd Avenue. Through the installation of new, and larger-scale infrastructure, this upgraded system will support population growth, accommodate heavier rainfall, and advance the City’s regulatory requirement to eliminate combined sewer overflows

This work is aligned with the City’s Healthy Waters Plan, Vancouver’s strategy to protect local waterways from pollution, address climate change, and upgrade aging sewer and drainage infrastructure to support our growing city.

"We’re investing in neighbourhoods across the city," said Mayor Ken Sim. "Delivering core infrastructure while creating a more vibrant and resilient Marpole supports local businesses and improves quality of life for residents every day."

Good Things Are in the Works in Marpole

The project also included neighbourhood improvements that help make Marpole more welcoming for residents, businesses and visitors.

Along Granville Street, crews renewed 600 metres of sidewalk and restored curbs, gutters, tree pits and road surfaces to create smoother, safer routes for people walking, cycling and driving. Four new street trees have been planted, with more to come later this year. Additionally, more than a dozen new litter bin enclosures will be installed to help keep the neighbourhood clean and welcoming.

These improvements were supported by a commitment of up to $700,000 from the Uplifting Communities Fund, which complements existing capital projects to enhance public spaces and support local neighbourhoods.

The City thanks residents, businesses, and commuters for their patience and cooperation while ongoing critical rehabilitation, renewal, and development projects take place.
