Expect travel delays on East Hastings Street near Highway 1 this weekend

August 14 2026 –

Drivers travelling through the northeast area of Vancouver this weekend are advised to expect delays while repaving work takes place on sections of East Hastings Street between the Cassiar Connector and Skeena Street, close to Highway 1.  This work will help improve road conditions and extend the life of this important transportation route. 

Road closures on Saturday and Sunday  

On Saturday, August 15 and Sunday, August 16, drivers should expect the following daily impacts between 6 am and 7 pm: 

  • East Hastings Street will be closed in both directions between Renfrew Street and Boundary Road.  
  • No access to Highway 1 on ramps from East Hastings Street. 
  • Traffic exiting Highway 1 at Exit 26 will only be able to travel westbound on East Hastings Street. No access to eastbound East Hastings Street. 

All roads are scheduled to reopen overnight, between 7 pm on Saturday and 6 am on Sunday. 

Impacts to travellers 

  • Buses will continue to operate through the closed area, however transit riders should expect delays. Check translink.ca/alerts  for the latest updates.  
  • Access to local residences and businesses will be maintained on East Hastings Street between Renfrew and Windermere streets. 
  • Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the closure. 
  • VPD traffic control personnel will be on site to support road users and pedestrians.  

Repaving work 

Repaving work involves removing the old roadway surface and replacing it with new asphalt to provide a smoother, safer, and longer-lasting surface for road users.  

This work is being completed as part of the City’s ongoing efforts to maintain and renew core infrastructure across Vancouver, guided by the 2023–26 Capital Plan.
