What you need to know

The Vancouver Landfill serves residential and commercial customers from Metro Vancouver for final disposal of their garbage.

The landfill also has a recycling area for residents to drop off a wide range of recyclable materials, many of which are accepted for free.

All charge rates based on weight are determined by rounding the weight of a load up to the nearest 0.01 tonnes.

All non-account charge rates are rounded to the nearest dollar.

Recycling drop-off at landfill is for residential customers only.

Aerosol paint and empty containers , maximum 50 spray cans (up to 24 ounces each) per day

Antifreeze and empty antifreeze containers

Clothing and textiles, including reusable bags (items must be clean and dry)

Cooking oil and grease (maximum 10 L per day)

Electronics, small appliances, and power tools (maximum 5 large items)

Materials we don't accept at the landfill

The following materials are not accepted here. They are included in take-back programs and accepted at designated drop-off locations.

Dead animals

Liquid or sludge

Hazardous waste, except approved asbestos

Material that has been on fire, is smoldering, flammable, or explosive

Any material that could cause undue risk, injury, or occupational disease

Any material deemed unacceptable by the City Engineer
Drop-off limit for mattresses
Starting June 1, 2025, the daily drop-off limit for recycling mattresses and box springs at the Vancouver Landfill will be reduced from 8 to 4 items for each customer.

This change helps us manage volumes safely and efficiently.

Clean concrete and asphalt accepted with conditions
We're looking for clean waste concrete and asphalt loads over 100 tonnes for use in road upgrades.

If your materials meet the requirements, you could dispose of them for free and save on landfill disposal charges.

Fees and surcharges

How a total fee is calculated
We take these steps to calculate your disposal fee:
1. When you arrive, staff ask what items you are dropping off and weigh your vehicle.
2. You dispose of your items.
3. Staff weigh your vehicle again and calculate the weight of the disposed items based on the difference.
4. You pay your fees before leaving.
How to avoid extra fees
Sort your load before drop-off to avoid extra fees

If you have a mixed load of items, you may:
- Weigh in, then drop off one item type at a time, and loop back to the weigh scales after each item is dropped off and fees will be based on each item type
- Weigh all items at once and dispose of everything at the garbage rate
We encourage you to sort your load before drop-off to make sure you don't have to pay additional fees.

Surcharges for banned materials and unsecured loads

You will pay a surcharge if your garbage load:

Contains banned materials that have not been separated for recycling or proper disposal
Is not secured using tarps or ropes to prevent litter

New rates go into effect January 3, 2025.

50% surcharge	Garbage loads containing banned recyclable materials: 5% or more by weight or volume of one or a combination of cardboard, printed paper, glass bottles and jars, plastic and metal containers, yard and garden trimmings, clean wood waste, and food waste
50% surcharge	All unsecured loads
100% surcharge	Garbage loads containing over 20% expanded polystyrene packaging, starting July 1, 2018

Rental, out-of-town, and dealer plate vehicles
If you are using a rental vehicle, out-of-town vehicle, or a vehicle with a dealer plate to drop off items:
- A deposit is required on entry to the facility
- The deposit amount is determined by the weighmaster based on the estimated cost of the load
- Deposit and fees must be paid by cash, debit, or credit card

Payment options

We accept payment by cash, debit card, business cheques, and all credit cards.

There are conditions when paying with a cheque or credit card, and when dropping items off using a rental vehicle.

Cheques
Cheques must be from a bank in the province of BC, and meet the following conditions:
- The name and address on your cheque must be the same as on your driver's licence – cheques with a handwritten or rubber-stamped address are not accepted.
- If you do not have your driver’s licence with you, or your passenger is paying, 2 pieces of identification, including a credit card, are required.
- Company cheques require a pre-printed company name, address, telephone number, and bank account information and you must show a valid driver's license as identification.
Credit card
When paying with a personal credit card:
- The card must be in your name
- You must show your driver’s licence as identification
When paying with a company credit card, the signature on the card must match the signature on your driver's licence unless:
- The company name on the card matches a company logo on the vehicle used for drop-off
- The company name on the card matches the name on the vehicle registration

Filming requests are reviewed case by case. We do our best to accommodate them, but approval depends on operational needs and staff availability.

For safety and capacity reasons, members of the public and hobby photographers are not permitted to access the landfill for photography or filming.

Compost soil

The Vancouver Landfill composting facility creates compost from yard trimmings for sale and donation. You may pick up compost from the landfill.
