  Historical significance

  

  Woodward's commission and early display

  Ellen Neel, a celebrated Kwakwaka'wakw artist, carved the Kakaso’las totem pole in 1955. Woodward’s Department Store commissioned this pole and 4 others, initially placing them at their Westmount Mall location in Edmonton, Alberta.

  Creation at Ferguson Point Studio

  Ellen Neel carved the pole at her Ferguson Point Studio in Stanley Park, assisted by her sons Robert, Dave, and John (Ted Jr.) Neel.

  Donation and preservation efforts

  In 1984, Woodward's donated the pole to the Museum of Anthropology (MOA). Robert Neel restored it before its installation at Brockton Point, where it has been on a long-term loan.

  The life and legacy of Ellen Neel

  

  Early life and background

  Ellen Neel was born in 1916 in Alert Bay, British Columbia. The granddaughter of renowned carver Charlie James, she began carving small totem poles for tourists at a young age.

  Career and contributions

  A trailblazing artist, Neel played a crucial role in reviving traditional carving and establishing Indigenous arts as a means to support communities.

  Legacy and influence

  Neel’s legacy extends beyond her artistic contributions. She was also a mentor and role model for future generations of women carvers. She passed away in 1966.

  Relocation details

  Conclusion of loan period

  After 40 years, the loan period for the Kakaso’las totem pole has come to an end. The pole will be returned to the Museum of Anthropology (MOA) this September, with the full support of the Neel family.

  Condition assessment and decision

  In September 2022, MOA conducted a condition assessment of the pole. Following this assessment, and in agreement with the artist’s family, it was decided in January 2024 not to renew the loan agreement.

  Schedule for relocation

  The Kakaso’Las totem pole is scheduled to be moved on September 4, 2024.
