Buy an interment or burial space

Full-size graves can accommodate:

• Traditional casket burials
• Green burials
• Interment of cremated remains 

Capacity

• Casket or green burials: 2 (Double depth)
• Cremated remains: Up to 8 

Reusability

Only casket spaces can be reused 40 years after the previous burial.

Information icon Reusing a space requires signed authorization from a family member of the previously deceased. Remains from any previous burial are shifted deeper into the site to accommodate the new burial above.

Up to 4 memorials for most graves. In designated upright sections, this can include 1 upright monument.

In-ground spaces can accommodate either 2 or 4 sets of cremated remains. A few sites may accommodate more.

Capacity

Above-ground spaces for cremated remains (niches in our columbaria walls) can accommodate up to 2 urns of cremated remains.

Two niches can be purchased side-by-side. This arrangement accommodates 4 sets of cremated remains and includes 1 panel for inscriptions across both niches.

You may use a family-owned site purchased in the past if: 

• Interment or burial space is available
• No restrictions from rights holders exist

Priority is given to those making arrangements for a death that has already occurred.

When you purchase a burial space at Mountain View Cemetery, you'll need to complete a rights transfer contract. This document confirms your purchase and grants you the rights of interment for the chosen space. As a rights holder, these rights are yours forever.

Signing requirements

Only 1 rights holder is required to sign the rights transfer, even if there are multiple rights holders for the site.

Required information for the contract

To finalize your rights transfer, prepare these details for all rights holders:

• Name
• Address
• Email address
• Phone number

Transferring your interment rights

A rights holder cannot privately sell their right of interment.

Rights of interment can be transferred to other family members as allowed under the Cemetery By-law External website, opens in new tab.

Payment required in advance

Information icon All spaces must be fully paid before any interment, burial, or placement of a memorial or grave marker.

• Major credit cards
• Debit cards
• Cheques (made payable to 'City of Vancouver')

Information icon Payments in cash are not accepted.

Payment plans

Payment plans are available for:

• Amounts over $10,000
• The purchase of traditional (full-size) spaces 
• Three or more spaces intended for cremated remains

Refund policy

The cost of a space is fully refundable within 30 days. After 30 days, only the original purchase cost of the site is refundable, less the portion allocated to the Care Fund and an administration fee. 

Information icon A rights holder cannot privately sell their right of interment. If a rights holder no longer wants or needs their space, they can either transfer it to a family member (as defined in the Cemetery By-law External website, opens in new tab) or return the site to the cemetery under the refund policy above.
