All memorial markers, including upright monuments and flat or flush grave markers, must adhere to specific size (including height for upright monuments) and material guidelines.
These guidelines are based on the location and size of your site, as well as other concerns such as safety and aesthetics.
Information icon Check with us to confirm the guidelines allowed on your site before ordering from a monument company.
Before submitting the application form for approval, review and complete all necessary criteria as outlined in the form.
Provide grave marker details including:
Size
Materials
Intended location
Completing this form accurately will facilitate a smoother approval process.
Information icon The application is only valid for 1 year from the date of approval and requires at least 5 working days post-delivery for installation.
Contact your monument company to let us know if you need an additional inscription. We will remove the marker and prepare it for the monument company.
After the inscription is added, the marker will be returned to us, and we will reinstall it at the site.
Upright monuments
For additional inscriptions on upright monuments, contact your monument company.
Niche panels
If you need to add an additional inscription to a niche panel, contact our office. We will prepare a mockup of the new inscription for your approval before any work is done.
After your grave memorial application is approved and the installation fee is paid, we will arrange the delivery and setup of the granite foundation for your monument.
The foundation will be placed at the designated end of the grave. If additional flat markers are permitted, they will be positioned along the grave’s centreline typically in 2-foot increments below the foundation.
Installation timeline
The setup time for the foundation can vary based on the size of the monument, inventory availability, and operational factors.
Plan for at least 2 weeks for standard sizes and up to 3 months for larger or custom sizes.
After your application has been approved and the installation fee is fully paid, the grave marker can be delivered to Mountain View Cemetery.
We try to install flat markers within 3 to 5 working days, unless:
Upcoming interments at the site and operational needs may require installations to occur afterward
Installation is scheduled for a specific date at the family’s request (additional fees will apply)
Delays occur because of severe weather conditions such as snow or frozen ground
Delays occur because of high volumes of scheduled interments, burials, or other operational activities
Other unforeseen circumstances occur that impact installation timing
On traditional burial lots, flat markers are aligned along the grave’s centreline in 2-foot increments starting at the top, as designated by the cemetery. We take special placement requests into account, but the final installation decisions are made by our team.
Each niche inscription is limited to 7 lines of text
The number of characters per line depends on the layout prepared by Mountain View Cemetery
Formatting details
Names are written in capital letters
Dates use the format "day-month-year" (for example, 25 Aug 2008), with months abbreviated
Epitaphs appear in italics, and punctuation is limited to initials (for example, J.D.) and names (for example, O’Connor).
Symbols and pictures are not allowed
Alternate characters (for example, Chinese, Arabic, or Cyrillic) can be used with cemetery office approval
Information icon The inscription must be approved and paid in full before work begins. Allow at least 5 working days from the time of approval and payment for completion.
After the form is submitted, we will show you a mockup of the inscription for your approval before any work will be done. We will prepare an inscription stencil, and the final design will be sandblasted onto the niche panel.
Niche panels are typically installed on the columbaria wall immediately after the accompanying interment.
The panels are made of andesite, a naturally porous stone, which may show discoloration over time, especially during the winter months. Routine steam cleaning is performed every 2 years to maintain the panel’s appearance.
Information icon All items placed in the cemetery are done so at your own risk. We are not responsible for any items left in the cemetery. Any items other than approved markers, monument, and flower containers may be removed at anytime and without notice. Items removed will be disposed of immediately.
If you're unsure whether a particular decoration is allowed, contact the cemetery office before placement.
