Firehall No. 2 replacement

We’re planning for a new, permanent Firehall No. 2 at 496 Alexander Street to provide emergency response services in the Downtown Eastside and surrounding area.

The future facility will replace the existing Firehall No. 2 at 199 Main Street, which was originally built in 1974.

Temporary Firehall No. 2 annex update

Planning for a new firehall means the temporary annex previously proposed at Union and Gore is no longer needed.

This reflects our commitment to a permanent solution that improves service delivery in the Downtown Eastside and helps reduce pressure on first responders.

What's happeningEarly work for Firehall No. 2 demolition this summer

In late June 2026, we will begin preparing the existing buildings at 496 Alexander Street for demolition. Demolition is anticipated to begin in summer 2026.

Removing the vacant buildings will allow the site to be safely secured and prepared while planning the future firehall advances.

Construction is not beginning immediately. Planning and design work for the future firehall is still underway.

What to expect during demolition

Site preparation and demolition work are planned during our standard construction noise hours:

  • Monday to Friday, 7am to 8pm on public property
  • Monday to Friday, 7:30am to 8pm on private property
