Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services started in 1886 as the volunteer Vancouver Fire Brigade.
The brigade expanded so rapidly "as regards to equipment and efficiency" that in 1911 a committee of London businessmen rated Vancouver's service the third in the world, behind only London and Leipzig.
