2003 Olympic vote

On February 22, 2003, we held a vote on Vancouver's participation in hosting the 2010 Olympic Winter Games and Paralympic Winter Games.

The results were 64% in favour of the Olympic bid. Voter turnout was 50%.

On July 2, 2003, the International Olympic Committee subsequently chose Vancouver as host city for the games.

Olympic vote process

On December 10, 2002, Council decided to hold a vote on Vancouver's participation in hosting the games.

Residents who either lived in or owned property in Vancouver were eligible to vote.

As of the previous civic election (November 16, 2002), there were 293,263 registered voters in Vancouver. For the Olympic Vote, the Election Office planned for a voter turnout in the range of 30% (or about 90,000 voters).

Here is the exact question that was on the ballot:

"Do you support or do you oppose the City of Vancouver's participation in hosting the 2010 Olympic Winter Games and Paralympic Winter Games?

___ YES, I support the City of Vancouver's participation.
___ NO, I oppose the City of Vancouver's participation."
