2010 Winter Games By-law
(By-law No. 9908)
Vancouver City Council enacted the 2010 Winter Games By-law on July 23, 2009. This consolidated By-law includes both technical and administrative requirements to help streamline and “fast-track” the building permit approval and inspection process for temporary structures and buildings used for the 2010 Winter Games. Please note that this By-law applies only to building permit applications for pre-determined VANOC-controlled and City-controlled sites; a list of these sites can be found in Schedules A and B of the by-law. Building permit applications related to the 2010 Winter Games that are not part of these sites shall follow the regular permit and inspection process.
This by-law was developed by Building Policy staff to help mitigate the increased pressure to the City Departments responsible for the issuance of building permits and the delivery of inspection services, as well as ensure that the large number of temporary venues constructed for the Winter Games be safe and accessible. The by-law stems from alternative Building By-law requirements that have been used in the past for these types of temporary structures, and utilizes a greater reliance on designated design professionals under contract to either VANOC or the City.
The City of Vancouver will host the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic games in February and March, 2010. For more information, please visit our 2010 Host City website.
