In-home Energy Display

In-home Energy Display

We live in an action/reaction world: get a speeding ticket and you’ll most likely drive a bit slower next time! It’s easy to see the impact of something you do when the consequence is presented right afterwards. Unfortunately, electricity conservation doesn’t have the benefit of instantaneous feedback; bills arrive once every three months or so, making it difficult to see the impacts or benefits of altering electricity use.

The Green Homes Program requires the installation of an indoor electricity usage display meter, which provides the homeowner with near-instantaneous information regarding the effectiveness of their energy conservation efforts. Forget to turn off the TV when you left for work, or leave a few extra lights on overnight? This meter can tell you exactly how much that cost, highlighting the economic benefits of energy conservation.

While there are a number of in-home display meters on the market (Energy Aware Globeand Blue Line Globeare two Canadian examples), most units use similar technologies. Typical meters employ a wireless link between the in-home unit and a sending unit that is mounted on the building’s electricity meter. No tools are needed, and setup is easy!

By-law Language:
