Main functions are to carry out regular inspections and monitor the treatment and discharge to sewers of industrial and commercial wastes; search out the sources and eliminate the discharge of volatile or other hazardous substances entering public or private sewers; advise plant management, consultants, contractors on required treatment systems for wet waste industries. This branch also issues Waste Discharge permits on behalf of Metro Vancouver.

The branch responds to spills, complaints and requests for information regarding hazardous waste disposal and sewer discharges.
The branch coordinates the City’s responsibilities for dealing with contaminated sites including underground storage tanks at residential sites. Some staff are members of the Vancouver Fire Department’s HAZMAT Response Team and provide technical support during hazardous materials incidents (see below). The branch also participates in City initiatives that take a coordinated approach to launching, resolving or responding to environmental initiatives and issues including sustainability.
