City Council approved a program of incentives to facilitate the conservation and rehabilitation of heritage buildings in Gastown, Chinatown and the Hastings Street Corridor (between Cambie Street and Heatley Avenue) and the Victory Square area. The program will be available for a 5-year period (2003-2008) to kick start economic activity in these important historic areas through work on individual heritage buildings.

The heritage incentive package consists of two separate programs:

Heritage Façade Rehabilitation Program [pdf] provides capital grants to heritage building owners who improve the exterior appearance of their buildings. Generally work to repair, restore or enhance the building facade will be eligible. The program would cover 50% of eligible costs up to a maximum of $50,000 per principal facade

Heritage Building Rehabilitation Program [pdf] includes the ability to provide property tax exemption for up to 10 years and bonus density to facilitate a major rehabilitation of a heritage building. Eligible work includes structural and foundation repair as well as seismic upgrades and facade rehabilitation.

The Heritage Building Rehabilitation Program is currently on hold and under review. Learn more about this review.

Program details including eligibility, submission requirements and the methodology for determining incentive amounts are fully described in the above PDF documents.
