Civic Celebrations
Residents and visitors can mark their calendars for two major civic celebrations in 2011: "Birthday Live" on April 6, 2011 and "Summer Live" on the weekend of July 8-10, 2011. Both events will be free of charge and fun for everyone.
Birthday Live
When: Wednesday, April 6, 2011
Location: Jack Poole Plaza (site of the Olympic Cauldron), outdoor plaza at Thurlow & Cordova Street, adjacent to the Vancouver Convention Centre, 1055 Canada Place
The City of Vancouver was incorporated on April 6, 1886 and on April, 6, 2011 Vancouver will come together to celebrate 125 years of history with a free, fun-filled, family-friendly event that honours our city’s diversity, First Nations heritage and distinction as a Cultural Capital of Canada for 2011. The Birthday Live celebration will begin mid-afternoon and continue through the evening with live music and entertainment, innovative visual art, children’s activities and more. Vancouver’s Mayor Gregor Robertson and other dignitaries will be on hand for official ceremonies including lighting the cauldron and cutting a BIG birthday cake! Stay tuned for detailed program info.
Summer Live
When: July 8,9,10, 2011 (Friday – Sunday)
Location: Stanley Park
To celebrate Vancouver 125 the City of Vancouver will host a free, family-friendly arts and entertainment extravaganza on the weekend of July 8-10, 2011. Summer Live will be held in Stanley Park—one of Vancouver’s most treasured places and a space that is steeped in history as the City’s first official green space and as home to traditional Coast Salish territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations. This multi-disciplinary, outdoor event will be presented on multiple stages and spaces—all of it free to the public. Summer Live celebrates Vancouver’s vibrant cultural community, drawing on the city’s rich ethnic diversity, First Nations heritage and contemporary creative focus.
