Cultural Awards - Recognizing Excellence in the Community
The City of Vancouver is committed to recognizing the important role that artists play in our community, to raising the profile of the cultural sector generally, and to celebrating the accomplishments and talents of individual artists in our midst. The following awards are just some of the ways that the City officially recognizes important contributions to Vancouver's creative sector.
Vancouver Book Award
The Vancouver Book Award is an annual $2,000 prize honouring books in any genre that demonstrate excellence and contribute to the appreciation and understanding of Vancouver’s history, unique character or the achievements of its residents.
The Mayor's Arts Awards
The Mayor's Arts Awards celebrates honourees, and recognizes emerging artists. This annual event celebrates the outstanding achievements and promise of Vancouver's creative community in 10 disciplines and in three special categories.
Poet Laureate Award
The role of a Poet Laureate is to reflect the life of a city through readings of poetry. As an ambassador for the literary arts, the Laureate incorporates poetry into a range of official and informal city activities. The creation of this position confirms the city's support for the arts in general, and for the literary arts in particular.
Artist Live/Work Studio Awards
The Artist Studio Award Program awards four live/work studios to Vancouver-based, low income professional artists for a term of three years. One studio is provided rent-free while the others are provided at below market rents. Recipients are selected through an Assessment Committee Peer Review process based on criteria that include financial need and artistic merit.
