Details: Social Purpose is a term that is increasingly being used to describe the work of not-for-profit, social enterprise and for-profit organizations that are dedicated to social purpose or mission-based work. The OUR SPACES, OUR PLACES! conference seeks to draw together these organizations along with funders, investors, government, and real estate professionals working together to find solutions that provide quality, secure, mission-enhancing workspace for community organizations.
Developed by Vancouver’s Social Purpose Real Estate Group, this conference represents the first time in Vancouver where not-for-profit organizations, funders and real estate investors will collectively gather to build capacity in social purpose real estate including topics on:
- Real Estate Planning Fundamentals: Learn about the planning process for acquiring and developing a facility
- Financing your Project: Explore financing options and what you need to prepare for and access financing
- Readiness for Co-Location: Top 10 strategic questions to consider
- Finding Partners and Building Intentional Communities: How to identify the right partners and tenants for co-location
- Sharing Programming and Services...or not: The benefits and challenges of shared services

OUR SPACES, OUR PLACES! BURSARY GUIDELINES & APPLICATION
Background:
In June 2008, Vancouver City Council approved a new 15-year Cultural Facilities Priorities Plan. One of the Plan’s key recommendations centres on training and capacity building for cultural space development.
This fall, the City of Vancouver is offering up to ten bursaries to assist individuals in attending OUR SPACES, OUR PLACES!: Buying, Leasing and Sharing Spaces for Mission-Driven Organizations conference, November 8 & 9, 2010 in Vancouver. These bursaries are designed to enable participation in the OUR SPACES, OUR PLACES! conference by Vancouver-based, professional artist / creators, representatives from Vancouver arts / culture organizations and others involved in creative space development.
The Bursary covers the full conference registration.
Deadline for applications is Monday, September 20, 2010 at 4 pm.

Eligibility:
The OUR SPACES, OUR PLACES! Bursary is open to Vancouver-based
- professional artist /creators
- individuals representing Vancouver arts and culture organizations, and
- others involved in creative space development.
Only one application per organization/business will be accepted.
Priority for OUR SPACES, OUR PLACES! Bursaries will be given to individuals or organizational representatives who can demonstrate how they plan to bring what they have learned at the conference back to their community, audience, organizations and networks. Applicants from arts/culture organizations/agencies/businesses will be required to submit a letter of support from their Director, Board or CEO. Individual artist/creators will be required to submit evidence of residency within the City of Vancouver.

Application Process and Selection Criteria:
A maximum of ten bursaries will be awarded through a competitive juried process. Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee made up of one staff member from the City of Vancouver, Cultural Services division, one member of the City’s Cultural Facilities Implementation Team and two past-recipients of previous bursaries.
Applications will be evaluated based on the individual's current or planned activities regarding development and operation of cultural spaces—spaces where arts and culture are created, produced and presented. Applications will be assessed based on the following criteria:
- Relevance of the conference to the applicant’s individual professional development goals;
- Relevance of the conference to the applicant / organization’s capital development goals;
- Benefit of the applicant’s participation in the conference to the larger Vancouver arts and culture community

Terms:
The OUR SPACES, OUR PLACES! Bursary has no cash value and provides for one non-transferable registration to the OUR SPACES, OUR PLACES! Conference in Vancouver, November 8 and 9, 2010.
Successful applicants will be required to indicate their acceptance of these terms and conditions including their commitment to attend the full two-day conference and to notify the City of Vancouver as soon as possible of any changes in participation, so that the Bursary may be made available to another applicant.
Please note: Late applications will not be accepted, and incomplete applications will not be forwarded to the Bursary Jury.
