Georgia and Dunsmuir Viaducts, the False Creek Flats and the Broader Eastern Core Strategy

Background: Georgia & Dunsmuir Viaducts Study Phase I

In 2010 Council launched a study to analyze options surrounding the future of the Georgia and Dunsmuir Viaducts. Originally constructed in 1915 to bypass the tidal waters, rail lines and industrial uses below, the current structures were rebuilt in the 1960s as the first component of a larger freeway system which was planned but never realized. The past few decades have brought drastic changes to the area below and has led many to weigh the utility of these structures against the barriers and disconnections they create, both physically and visually.

Through initial staff and consultant analysis it was revealed that any impacts of alterations to the viaducts were manageable provided that there is continued investment in transit, walking and cycling to accommodate current travel demand and future growth (Report on Phase I Results).

The Eastern Core Strategy: the viaducts and false creek flats

Vancouver City Council approved the next phase of work on the Vancouver viaducts in July 2011, which includes an analysis of land use, cost, development potential and structural reconfiguration options. View the Council report. It was also acknowledged that the structures are part of a larger transportation and land use network stretching from Northeast False Creek to Clark Drive in an area known as the Eastern Core. The report recommends proceeding with more detailed viaducts’ analysis in the context of a “big picture” land use and transportation examination of the broader area. The proposed study area is shown on the map above and is not intended to be a hard line, as there is a need for coordination and consideration of surrounding community planning processes.
