Approved Design

PWL Partnership Landscape Architects Inc., a landscape architecture firm, has been contracted to do the technical design for the final approved Modified Enhanced Existing Option redesign concept for Granville Street. Currently, city staff and stakeholders are working with PWL in design development.

Description and Concept

The Enhanced Existing option proposes the fewest changes to the existing operation of the street. North of Smithe Street, the existing curved bus mall is proposed to be straightened to provide a consistent sidewalk width of 8.5 metres for pedestrians. South of Nelson Street, traffic patterns would remain unchanged. Sidewalks would be widened by the width of the existing parking lane to provide a sidewalk that can be used to accommodate parked vehicles between street trees.

Buses and authorized vehicles would continue to use the dedicated lanes north of Smithe Street. Greater transit priority and reduced conflicts will result by removing northbound general purpose traffic starting at Nelson, one block further south than at present.

A one-block civic event space is proposed between Robson and Georgia Street. The plaza, characterized by both permanent and temporary installations, is envisaged as the centre of commercial street life in the downtown. Access to the two Granville Street rapid transit stations between Robson and Dunsmuir Streets will also be facilitated by the wider sidewalks of the civic plaza.
