Mayor's Breakfast Dialogue:
Shared Learnings

On October 12, during Homelessness Action Week, Mayor Gregor Robertson hosted the Mayor's Breakfast Dialogue which welcomed speakers to discuss homelessness issues and to share what they've learned in their experiences. Mayor Robertson was joined by former premier Mike Harcourt; Rev. Pitman Potter, theology student Jessica Bean and Dr. Tim Cheek of the Neighbourhood Ministry; Peter Greenwell, Coordinator for Homeless Programs at Collingwood Neighbourhood House; and Charles Gauthier, Executive Director of the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association.

Opening Doors
This piece was put together for More Than A Roof's 25th anniversary event. It profiles the personal comeback journey of three of our tenants from addiction and street homelessness. Mike, Heather and Charles share candidly about the devastating circumstances took them into addiction and homelessness as well as the the factors that have contributed to personal recovery. The video also gives a preview of More Than A Roof's soon to open homeless at risk building Karis Place. This is the Society's tenth tenant community and its completion coincides with the the 25th anniversary of the organization.

2009 Survey of Low-Income Housing in the Downtown Core
Single room occupancy (SRO) buildings are rooming houses and residential hotels containing small single rooms. These SRO units represent the most basic and the lowest cost housing provided by the private market.

Social Planning, the Housing Centre, Drug Policy, Non-Market Operations, Carnegie Centre and the Gathering Place have been brought into one cohesive department.

Housing and Homelessness Strategy

On July 28, 2011, Council approved Vancouver's Housing and Homelessness Strategy. The strategic directions in the Strategy address all points along the Housing Continuum, from emergency shelters through to affordable rental housing and homeownership. The Strategy will set priorities for capital projects, and direct housing programs, services and decisions.

The Housing Centre is now Housing Policy, and is responsible for the City of Vancouver’s housing policy, programs and research. The City’s housing focus has been partnering with senior levels of government to develop social housing. The City’s goal is to enlarge the supply of housing in Vancouver with a range of tenures and dwelling types sufficient to meet the needs of a variety of socio-economic groups. This is part of the City’s efforts to maintain and improve the quality of residential neighbourhoods

Housing Plan for the Downtown Eastside
The Housing Plan for the Downtown Eastside (Downloadable PDFPDF, 3.35MB) was adopted by Council on September 22, 2005. The plan presents a vision for the future of housing in Chinatown, the Downtown Eastside Oppenheimer District, Gastown, the Hastings Corridor, the Industrial Lands, Strathcona, Thornton Park and Victory Square. Single Room Accommodation (SRA) By-law
On October 21, 2003, Vancouver City Council enacted the Single Room Accommodation (SRA) By-law. The By-law manages the rate of change of low-income housing in Vancouver’s Downtown Core. Single Room Accommodation includes single room occupancy hotels (known as SROs), rooming houses and non-market projects with rooms less than 320 square feet. Affected owners are required to obtain approval from Council to demolish or convert SRA designated rooms. Learn more...
