City-owned Site: 3595 West 17th Avenue
The City purchased 3595 West 17th Avenue in May, 2005 as a continuation of a long standing civic practice of supporting affordable housing options in the City. Dunbar is a community where there is no social housing available even though 6% of households are in core housing need.
On June 29th, 2005 ( PDF, 388KB) the City notified the Dunbar Residents Association about the site purchase and outlined the broad intent of providing supportive housing for singles, seniors or families. On November 1st, 2005 ( PDF, 261KB) the City sent a letter to residents in the area indicating that no decisions would be made until funding is available from senior levels of government and the City’s Supportive Housing Strategy was completed. On June 6, 2007, the revised Supportive Housing Strategy was passed unanimously by City Councilors at a Special Council meeting. Funding for 3595 West 17th Avenue was announced by the Province on March 17, 2009.
Three non-profit societies are involved with this supportive housing: Coast Mental Health Society, St George’s Place Society & the Yaffa Housing Society ( PDF, 84KB).
Further information is also available on the Coast Mental Health Society website.
