How to File a Noise Complaint
Policy
Property Use Inspections Division has a standard policy for the investigation of complaints. These policy guidelines are:
- Complaints must be validated by the name and phone# and/or address of the complainant. Anonymous complaints will not be processed unless an unsafe condition is identified.
- The nature of the complaint must have a direct impact on the complainant. One example of a direct impact would be if the property in question is in close proximity, i.e., next door or across the street or lane or in all cases where an unsafe condition is identified or work without permit is in progress.
Note: Confidentiality of complaints is protected under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
Noise Complaints
Our two (2) dedicated Property Use Inspectors respond to the majority of the noise complaints EXCEPT for these noise related issues.
For any noise related issues related to construction noise outside allowed hours, loud music and/or boisterous behaviour from businesses or private homes that arise outside of City of Vancouver working hours, please contact the Vancouver Police Non-Emergency Line at 604.717.3321.
File a Complaint
There are 3 ways to file a noise complaint with all the required detailed information provided:
- Call our Noise Complaints Hotline: 604.873.7753;
- Email our Noise e-mail account: Noise@vancouver.ca; or
- Fill out our on-line complaint form.
Detailed Information Required
- Provide your name, phone# and address.
- Provide the address of your noise concern.
- Provide details of your concern such as:
- What type of noise? Construction, equipment, people, radio, waste hauler trucks, leaf blower, live music in restaurant, lawn mowers, etc.
- When is the noise occurring? (time, dates)
- How often is the noise occurring?
- Have you approached the person(s) or establishment who is causing the concern? What was the outcome?
- Have you contacted any other department regarding your concern? E.g., Police, Health?
- Other known details, e.g., Location of the equipment, company names, waste hauler truck #, container bin #.
