Bicycle Courier
If you will be operating a courier bicycle for a licensed courier company, you will be required to successfully complete a written examination approved by the Inspector with payment of the appropriate fee and purchase a numbered plate to attach to your bicycle. While operating a courier bicycle, you must carry your picture identification displaying your full name, address and date of birth, at all times. You must also be 19 years of age or older.
The following are the steps required to obtain a licence:
Step 1: Study
Study the material covered in the Courier Study Package
(167kb). This package will help you prepare for the written examination and can be picked up at the Licence Office.
Step 2: Pass the Written Examination
Take the written examination at the Licence Office. An appointment is not required. This examination can only be written on Wednesdays between 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. You must provide us with your current photo identification, displaying your current address and date of birth.
The fee to write the examination is $34.00 and you must obtain a score of 16/20 to pass. Once the examination has been completed and marked, you will be notified immediately if you have passed or failed. If you have failed the examination, you may rewrite it on another day. The fee to rewrite the examination is $34.00.
Step 3: Purchase Your Plate
As soon as you have passed the written examination, you may purchase your bicycle courier plate. The fee for a bicycle courier plate is $18.00 and the plate will expire annually on December 31st of every year. Fees will not be pro-rated. A replacement plate to replace a lost or stolen one can be purchased at the same rate as a regular one. There will not be a discount for a replacement.
In January of each year, you will be required to purchase a new plate and provide us with your current photo identification displaying your current address and date of birth at the time of purchase. If you have not had a bicycle courier plate in the last three consecutive years, you will be required to write the examination again.
