Planning

The Planning Department’s four divisions, City-Wide & Regional Planning, Community Planning, Current Planning and Central Area Planning advise Council on policies which guide growth and change in the city.

City-Wide & Regional Planning develops City-Wide policy, plans and regulations and contributes to region-wide planning initiatives. Community Planning coordinates and carries out community planning and policy development for areas outside of the Central Area. Current Planning provides urban design review, development planning, rezoning processing, heritage management and major projects planning throughout the city. Central Area Planning undertakes area planning and policy development, as well as review and advice on specific development projects, in the downtown peninsula and surrounding areas including Downtown Eastside, False Creek and the False Creek Flats.

The Planning Department considers the implications of a wide range of social, economic, physical and environmental issues on the livability of the City. It is responsible for administering the Zoning and Development By-law and Official Development Plans, and has responsibility under the Provincial Heritage Conservation Act.
