Traffic Subcommittee

New Pedestrian Light

The Hastings-Sunrise Traffic Committee meets monthly to discuss ways to improve pedestrian safety and calm traffic on streets in Hastings Sunrise. Recent initiatives include: the re-classification of Dundas Street to a Neighbourhood Collector; new traffic signals at Hastings & Lillooet and McGill & Slocan; and a letter to local Members of the Legislative Assembly requesting the Province to reduce the speed limit on residential streets to 40 km/hour.

Housing Subcommittee

Single-Family Houses

The Hastings-Sunrise Housing Committee meets on a regular basis to discuss Vision Directions on new housing types, housing affordability and priorities for action. In May the group toured the Grandview Woodlands and Mount Pleasant neighbourhoods to view new construction in RS-7 zones (single-family with guidelines). The group is also pursuing the Vision Direction on Homes with Two Suites: “housing variety should be increased by allowing the development of some homes with two legal suites.”

Public Realm Subcommittee

Public Realm Street Furniture

Recent initiatives include completing an inventory of what is in the public realm along Hastings, hosting design workshops to better utilize the public space, and fundraising to pay for improvements. The Subcommittee also successfully lobbied for the Neighbourhood Centres Program to start work in the Hastings North area in Fall 2007. The program will address public realm issues and deliver new housing types.

The Public Realm Subcommittee has organized two neighbourhood walking tours guided by John Atkin. The North of Hastings Walking tour was held in summer 2007 and the South of Hastings Walking tour was held in summer 2008. View the North of Hastings Walking Tour Brochure (PDF, 2.69MB).

Pandora Park

On July 11, 2005 the Park Board approved a concept plan for a $210,000 upgrade to Pandora Park. The proposed design addresses the community’s desire to increase the opportunities for the use and enjoyment of the park by area residents. The improvements are concentrated in the central core of the park and include replacement and relocation of the playground; a pathway in the central core, additional picnic and seating areas, retention of mature park trees, increased visual and physical connection between the central core and the eastern portion of the park, a reduction of hard surface area, an increase in the amount of trees, flowering shrubs and greenspace. For more information, see item 7.

Leeside Tunnel

Leeside Tunnel

Leeside Tunnel connects the Empire Bowl area of Hastings Park to East Pender Street. One of the first young people to start using the space was a skate-boarding graffiti artist named Lee. Because Lee and his friends spent so much of their time in the tunnel it became known as Leeside. More recently, the Leeside Tunnel has become an important space for BMX riders, mountain bikers and a pedestrian link to Hastings Park. In the Summer of 2005 local community groups held a series of workshops to determine a long-term solution for upgrading the tunnel and creating a well-utilized, safe community space. Hastings North Business Improvement Association

The Business Improvement Area is an integral part of community life on Hastings Street. The BIA represents over 600 members, mostly merchants, within the area bounded by Renfrew Street, Hastings Street, Commercial Drive, Powell Street and Semlin Street. The BIA is the central voice for businesses in advocating for the neighbourhood and local shopping area. The BIA works in partnership with local service providers and government to ensure that the shopping district is safe, clean and well maintained. They also sponsor special events and projects including: Canada Day celebrations, Trick or Treat on Hastings Street, Santa’s Visit to Hastings, graffiti and litter clean ups and a mural campaign. East Vancouver Port Lands

East Vancouver Port Lands

The East Vancouver Port Lands (EVPL) study is a planning process involving the City of Vancouver, the Burrardview Community Association, and the Vancouver Port Authority (VPA). The EVPL area occupies the eastern portion of the VPA lands on Burrard Inlet. The study involves managing the unique circumstance of residential uses immediately adjacent to a growing port, which creates many challenges in ensuring both port and residential needs are respected and impacts are addressed.

The plan will identify what specific type of port and other uses could be developed in the area, and what measures are required to allow the port to grow with less impact on the community. A broad and lengthy list of issues was developed by representatives of various interest groups. While the goal will be to try to address this entire list, the priority for this process is to deal with future land uses, and impact reduction measures for noise, views, traffic, and air quality. As part of dealing with these impact areas, an acoustical study is being conducted and will provide recommendations on future mitigation strategies. The EVPL plan is expected to be considered by City Council and the VPA Board by the end of 2005. View more information on the EVPL plan.
