Kensington-Cedar Cottage Community Visions Program

The Kensington-Cedar Cottage (KCC) Community Vision, approved by City Council in 1998, was developed by people who live and work in KCC, with the assistance of City staff. The Vision will be used at City Hall to guide decisions affecting KCC, and to set priorities for funding, programs and services. For the community, the Vision provides a focus for local actions and initiatives.

  • KCC Community Vision - Complete Vision document approved by Council, including what local residents had to say about community involvement, crime, traffic, and new housing choices. Available in small PDF files.
  • KCC Community Vision Summary - Vision highlights
  • KCC Community Vision Action Plan - Approved by Council in 1999. Lists actions that City departments can take over the next two decades to implement the Vision.

Implementing the Vision in KCC

The key to making the Vision a reality is the continued involvement of the community in working together and in partnership with the City.

Kensington-Cedar Cottage CityPlan Committee

The KCC CityPlan Committee is an independent committee set up by the community in 1999 to monitor the implementation of the Community Vision and to facilitate ongoing community involvement. The committee meets monthly to share information and discuss the status of implementation actions as they relate to the Vision. While City staff attend most meetings, the opinions expressed in the meeting notes are those of the committee and not the City. The KCC CityPlan Committee meets the first Thursday of each month (except July, August, and January) at 7:00 p.m. at Trout Lake Community Centre.

Initiatives

"In creating this Vision, KCC residents generated many ideas about what the
community could do for itself - from community gardens to crime prevention to
business promotion - with some support and organizational help." - KCC Vision

In addition to the City actions outlined in the KCC Community Vision Action Plan, the community has initiated several projects based on ideas in the Vision. Find out more about these Initiatives.

Pan Visions Meetings

Pan Visions Meetings are jointly hosted by the chairs of the CityPlan Committees and held at their discretion. The purpose of the Pan Visions is for areas with completed Community Visions (Dunbar, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Victoria-Fraserview/Killarney, Sunset, Renfrew-Collingwood, Hastings-Sunrise, Arbutus Ridge-Shaughnessy-Kerrisdale, and Riley Park-South Cambie) to meet each other, share their successes and challenges, and identify opportunities to work collaboratively.

On November 26, 2006 the Renfrew-Collingwood and Sunset CityPlan Committees hosted a workshop with Jim Diers, the former Director of Seattle’s Department of Neighbourhoods. At the workshop, participants discussed how to mobilize their assets—their passion, knowledge, skills, and relationships—in support of caring communities, and revitalized neighbourhoods.

For more information about Jim Diers and a review of his book “Neighbor Power: Building Community the Seattle Way”, visit www.neighborpower.org.

At a meeting on January 28, 2006, Ian Lockwood, a Senior Transportation Engineer with the firm Glatting Jackson in West Palm Beach Florida, met with over 40 residents to discuss traffic calming measures (see pictures below). View Ian Lockwood’s transportation paper (PDF, 3.94MB).
