1. Additions to the Agenda
2. Approval of notes -
3. From the Ground Up:
Greening Urban Brownfields in our Community (UBC students came to the committee to get feedback from the committee regarding their research project)
- The objective of the project is to find privately owned sites, which are currently sitting vacant, and could be used by the community as a community green space. The idea is that the city or the community could lease the land from the land owner for a nominal fee and then the community could plant the site with plants that would help to remediate the soil. The students would like to develop a manual, with assistance from the community, which outlines a process that community groups could go through to help establish vacant sites as community green spaces and also help to remediate contaminated sites.
The committee liked the idea behind the project but expressed some concerns:
- concern about how to rally enough volunteers to do the work
- concern over who would be liable for the sites
- the community would need help to know the type of plants that would need to be planted and how to maintain a viable ecosystem
- the community would need some help with large scale landscaping efforts
- maintenance of site like this is a problem because often people move or loose interest and the site gets left
- community concerned in general about sites being left vacant as it creates a hole in their community and would like to see taxation changed to discourage sites being left vacant
4. Gibby’s Field-Dan F
Dan provided some back ground information about the history of Gibby’s Field and the community’s efforts over the last 8 years to have the 3 vacant single family lots converted into park or community green space. The group has held a community picnic, community workshops and a workshop with UBC students to generate a Vision for these sites. Recently Gibby’s Field has developed their own website: http://www.vcn.bc.ca/gibbys .
5. KCC Neighbour-Dan F
- encouraged people to submit stories to the newspaper and let people know that he intends to submit an article on Gibby’s Field
6. Communications Money—Future Priorities Anne R
- would like to investigate how the committee’s budget is spent and suggest some potential projects that the committee could work on in the future- Anne and Tina will bring some suggestions to a future meeting
- Anne would like the committee to focus on more social issues such as affordable housing etc.
7. Dickens School-Barbara M
- Updated the committee about all the work that the Save Dickens group has done to try and retain the 1913 portion of Charles Dickens Elementary School. Barbara said that Arts Umbrella is still interested in the space, and that there are many other community groups that would be interested in using some of the space. The City is still interested in discussing the issue.
- Seattle is doing some interesting projects with their schools where they add community energy sources and amnesties onto the school grounds—would like to use Seattle as a model for how schools could function in the neighbourhoods better.
The subcommittee’s next step is to continue to gather support and to raise awareness for the project
8. TransLink BC Parkway
- An Open House will be held on April 17, 2008 from 7-9:30pm at the Holiday Inn Express Metrotown in Burnaby (BC Ballroom)
- The open house is to discussion the design and future improvements to BC Parkway (a 26-kilometre multi-use trail designed for commuter and recreational use).
9. Future Projects
- it was suggested that it would be nice is KCC had more of an identity similar to how the large logs signifies that you are entering Kits
- more banners to help establish an identity
- need more outreach to encourage people to join the committee
- perhaps join the KCC Annual meeting with other events already happening in the community (Latin Festival etc)
10. Next meeting June 5th
- Trout Lake Community Centre 7-9pm
