Mosaics on Fraser Street

Mosaics on Fraser Street

Six large mosaics will be placed in the sidewalk along Fraser at 43rd, 45th and 47th. The Sunset Mosaic Committee distributed information sheets to schools and community groups to generate designs for the mosaics and the designs were developed at a series of community workshops. Construction of the mosaics is now underway! Mosaic construction workshops will be held in the fall and winter 2007—no experience is necessary so come lend a hand. Contact Louise Seto ( loseto@telus.net ) to find out when the next mosaic workshop is happening.

Prince Edward Way Public Art Subcommittee (PEPART)

Prince Edward Way Public Art Prince Edward Way Public Art Prince Edward Way Public Art

This subcommittee received over $40,000 from the City of Vancouver Community Public Art Fund to artistically interpret Prince Edward Street and make it more pedestrian-friendly. Shirley Weibe, a local artist was selected to work with the committee and residents to create this community public art project. In the fall of 2004, the subcommittee and Shirley unveiled the public art project called “Solar Patterns”, which is a series of brightly painted aluminum banners mounted on light poles along Prince Edward from 41st to S.E. Marine Drive. The banners portray imagery of the sun from diverse cultures throughout history. Over half of the designs were by students from Trudeau and Henderson Elementary Schools. Information plaques are also mounted on each pole.

Prince Edward Way Waterwise Blooming Boulevards Demonstration Project

Prince Edward Way Waterwise Blooming Boulevards Demonstration Project

Thanks to the efforts of the Prince Edward Way Waterwise Blooming Boulevards Subcommittee, and residents along Prince Edward Street, from 41st to Marine Dr., over 30 boulevard gardens have been planted between 2003 and 2004. These gardens do not require watering after the first year and are a great way to beautify Prince Edward Street, make it more pedestrian-friendly and for neighbours to work and get together. The Prince Edward Way Waterwise Blooming Boulevards Demonstration Project is now completed with the $10,000 grant from the Park Board’s Neighbourhood Matching Fund completely allocated.

South Hill Neighbourhood Cleanup and Greening

South Hill Neighbourhood

The South Hill Neighbourhood group organizes an annual Spring Clean up in March. It is more than just a clean up, it also involves the pruning and managing of the many boulevard flower beds at the end of the parking lots just west of Fraser Street. The beds are the creation of the neighbouring residents, who provided much labour and love. If you wish to help make your neighbourhood more beautiful and green, please contact Patrick Faehndrich at 604-321-0588.

The Clark/Knight Corridor Project

Clark at 1st Avenue

The Clark-Knight Corridor Plan is almost complete and will be presented to Council on March 29 th 2005 . Clark Drive and Knight Street provide a vital transportation corridor through the City. The purpose of the The Clark/Knight Corridor Project is to examine the function and operation of the entire route, reconciling the street’s transportation function with neighbourhood liveability. A review of current traffic environmental and land use conditions along the corridor was conducted in 2003. A newsletter and survey with options was delivered to residents along Clark/Knight in spring 2004. An open house was held in February 2005 to give a the public a chance to view the draft Clark Knight Corridor Plan before it is presented to Council.
