Introduction
Since January, the Community Visions staff have been busy with the first two steps of the Visions process-- Step 1, Getting in Touch , and Step 2, Sharing Ideas.
Outreach
January and February were spent doing outreach. About 80 groups were contacted and invited to participate in the program. (The groups contacted are listed on the next page.) In January we also distributed the first Visions newsletter to every home and business in Kensington-Cedar Cottage--nearly 13,000 in all (as well as providing the newsletter to 2,000 absentee owners).
Community Ideas Fair
The Community Ideas Fair took place on Saturday and Sunday, March 8th and 9th, at Lord Selkirk Elementary Annex. There were displays by community groups, local schools, UBC Planning students, and City Departments. Displays provided information on the Kensington-Cedar Cottage area, on a variety of topics, like traffic, housing, the environment, etc., and on the Visions program. Most displays were interactive, encouraging people to respond to questions about the future and to contribute their ideas, comments and/or suggestions on sticky notes anywhere on the displays. (Hundreds of contributions were made.) Artists were also on hand to sketch residents ideas for the future of Kensington Cedar Cottage. Attendance reached well over 200, keeping City staff and community volunteers busy fielding questions until the fair ended late Sunday afternoon.
Kid's Day
Kids Day at the Ideas Fair on Friday, March 7th attracted more than 300 school children, many of whom returned on the weekend with their families.
An important product of these first months of the program is a list of interested people. These are community members who signed up to receive information about opportunities to work on the next step of the process--creating options for the Kensington-Cedar Cottage Community Vision. Many people signed up at the Ideas Fair. Altogether the list has over 170 names and is growing. We will be continuing our outreach and promotion efforts to expand the list.
Community Liaison Group
A Community Liaison Group has been formed and is working with Planning staff to provide advice on the next step in the process. The Groups inaugural meeting was on March 4th and has met 3 times to date. There are 37 members--from different parts of Kensington-Cedar Cottage and from different age, community and ethnic groups.
Community Storefront Office
We have now moved into our community storefront office at #102, 1459 Kingsway and look forward to meeting with local residents and businesses here in the community. Our office hours are from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday, and from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday. Please call us at 873-5746 if you would like to meet at other times.
Issues
Issues that have emerged from contacts with the community include:
redevelopment of two former Safeway sites, at Knight and Kingsway, and 41st and Victoria traffic volumes and speed on arterials, particularly on Knight Street and Kingsway crime and safety character of new single-family development more services for children and teenagers lack of pedestrian amenities
The next step in the Visions process, Step 3, Develop Options, will involve the community in creating Visions options on various topics during workshop sessions--building on ideas from Steps 1 and 2. City staff will be coordinating the sessions and providing information. If you are interested in taking part in one of the workshops, or have any questions about the Kensington-Cedar Cottage Community Visions program, please call us at 873-5746, fax us at 873-3607, or drop in at #102, 1459 Kingsway.
